I always thought these were the best photos of the St Helens eruption that occurred 45 years ago today. Can you imagine being there and seeing that!!!

Two color landscape photos stitched together one on top of the other. Top photo shows a mountain climber in black with a red backpack and yellow socks standing on a field of snow watching a distant volcano beginning to erupt. The bottom photo, taken perhaps a minute later shows the entire volcano engulfed in ash as the cloud of ash spreads outward. The climber who was standing on the field of snow has sat down with their hand on their head in shock by the scene before them. Their long handled ice axe remains stuck in the snow next to them.
