Oh Jamie Kennedy is in this, for some reason he’s in quite a few techno thrillers of this era.
If you like text appearing at the bottom of your screen with each letter making a little noise to spell out where the scene takes place you are in for a treat with this movie. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, surprisingly.
I can already tell the Jamie Foxx comedy bits are going to be grating, the movie has a real weird tonal shift scene to scene
The movie goes from the reveal that a character’s wife has been brutally murdered after being tied to a chair to a scene in which Jamie Foxx complains about his cellmate farting, at length.
So essentially the inciting incident is Jamie Foxx tries to rob a seafood warehouse at the same time as some guys steal a bunch of gold, Jamie Foxx winds up in the same cell as one of the gold thieves who then has a heart attack.
The government investigators then decide they can use Jamie Foxx as bait to catch the master hacker psychopath behind the gold heist and recover the lost gold. There’s the making of a good plot here, they just lay it on too thick with the unfunny dialog from Foxx.
Jamie Kennedy is the encryption expert for the government unit tracking Jamie Foxx, who doesn’t realize he’s been implanted with a beacon.
The movie then transitions to the security team treating eavesdropping into the trials and tribulations of Jamie Foxx’s character Alvin as a sort of funny reality TV show as he babbles at various people in his life.
Oh yes and we get a phone call tracing scene which I’ll have to clip when I’m at my actual computer. “Call is coming from Dublin, no wait Seattle, wait no it’s coming from Pakistan, wait a minute”, etc etc
If you’re into people frantically flicking switches and turning dials and frowning at wave forms in front of blinking lights then you’ll love this movie.
“All right, I want every agent working around the clock...
to keep this joker out of the morgue and out of jail.
He doesn't get so much as a parking ticket or a hangnail.
From now on, Alvin Sanders leads a charmed life.”
We really don’t get much of the hacker villain in this (at least up until where I’ve watched to) and that’s a pity as he has this whole sinister Keyser Söze meets Michael Stipe from REM thing going on, actor is Doug Hutchison.
