Neither Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher or Gary Becker, but folk & pop musicians have been preaching in their songs since the 1960s: PRIVATE GOODS (sex, cars, clothing, 2-person relationships, individual conditions, sailboats & achievement) are important & desirable - PUBLIC GOODS (public water supply, libraries, local transport, police, Wikipedia, open source, unions, nature reserves, schools) are unimportant, ridiculous & dangerous. Thus having turned many of us into cynical individualists who no longer believe in anything.
