Out today is my first solo release, mending. Three ambient droneish tracks using modular synths for (almost) all of the sounds. Each track is a patch performed "live" for the recording, no edits, made over the autumn and winter, as i was thinking about transitions and transformations.

This is something I've been working on for a few months now - only just making some serious progress during my week off. It's a #eurorack case. It spins.
Power and audio delivery are via slip-ring. Have yet to test the stability of CV in this way but I at least know that the audio is completely clean from early testing.
It all started with a misunderstanding.

Sending from my new MIDI module to Sam's solenoid organ pipe air switcher.
I'm pleased with the progress on the Arduino coding. Learnt a lot, through some obvious mistakes.
Now at the stage where the "select" switch on the front panel can select different presets for different devices (choosing midi channel to send on, and choosing an array of specific note values which are functional). Been changing between Sam's AMS and a volca bass synth with just the physical controls.
And also that the "Adjust" knob can be used for things like octave select (for the volca), which is handy as there isn't really much option to transpose very far when sending midi notes.

Here's the current state of the module. Managed to get all the switches and LEDs working. Plus all the controls and inputs (though none of them actually do anything yet).
Biggest hurdles were my shonky soldering which took some repairing, forgetting some power to the board, wiring stuff backwards too - I'm always thankful that Arduinos are forgiving for this, at least so far for me.
Plus, turns out that VGA cables aren't just 15 parallel wires end to end, as I'd naively assumed - several of them are joined together internally. So I had to rejig some stuff to take that into account.
Overall very chuffed with it!

A couple of things I'm planning to make with the laser cutter this afternoon.
1. A panel for the comb switch array module I made recently. Slightly chaotic layout but think it should look nice. I'm going to try acetal for the first time, would intrigued to see how that will look with the engraved text.
2. A record with holes for putting ballbearings in, to sequence the comb array. Each concentric circle has a prime number of holes, so they only line up once per cycle. The ultimate polyrhythm sequencer? Or something that's impossible to make sound coherent? Only one way to find out.

New controller module coming along - managed to work out how to output Gate, Trigger, and Pitch from the Arduino via CV.
Need to build the actual switching interface, which might be the tricky bit with the physical controls, but have a couple of options for how to make that work.
Next thing to try and do is output an envelope shape too, mostly as I've got one free chanel of the DAC left over. Might be quite tricky to make it in code tho. I've been thinking about how to work it out mathematically, to get a curve that will work. Looking at y=1-√x and have an idea of how to implement it, but won't know till I've tried it.

I was surprised looking at tutorials that anyone who's made a piano type keyboard for an Arduino just uses push buttons, one per digital input. This resistor array I'm using is a method I remembered seeing inside an old Farfisa organ I dismantled when I was a teenager. Seems much more versatile. You could quite easily tune this to play specific notes in a set scale, but I like the idea of just setting the top and bottom notes and dividing the frequencies evenly in between. Some weird scales you can reconfigure on the fly. Could always whack it into a pitch quanteiser if bothered about that sort of thing!

Aufgewachsen auf der Kommandozeile von Debian und hatte bash, html, css, und php gelernt und nach C++ geschaut. Danach auf Windows Java, groovy, lua, xml gemacht und "viel" gespielt. Nun mit Lötkolben und 3D-Drucker auf C.
Zwischendurch immer mal wieder was mit #Musik, digital mit #Cubase, analog mit #Eurorack. #Fotografie kommt auch gelegentlich vor.
Nicht böse, nur enttäuscht, trotzdem gut gemeint, manchmal gut gemacht.
