I finally know how to efficiently create decorations that are bent along a rounded rectangular path. #openscad #creativecoding #3d #3dprinting

https://www.terlan.co.uk/ & hosted it a @beasts
It will convert a screen into a pixelated effect 4k image for desktop wallpaper, or a SVG vector image for printing or the likes and an #openscad 3d script that can be used for #3dprinting

Today I designed and fabricated a new parametric spool to wind up my addressable fairy/pebble/seed LED light strands. This one holds 40 meters of lights which I use for trail lighting at outdoor events. I use it in conjunction with battery-powered WLED controllers for fun animated trail lights.
It's open source and free to download/remix here: https://www.printables.com/model/1300796-led-light-spool-customizable
My #3dprinted #openscad cam driven plotter has power now :)
Electronics are reused from a previous project (the "bannister painter 5000") but reprogrammed a bit. Given that a complete revolution was more steps than I expected it's possible that I managed to make the wrong number of teeth on the printed drive pulley which would be mildly embarrassing
At the moment the draw speed is roughly constant around the outline, I do wonder if some control of acceleration might be better
Having started printing parts for this cam-driven drawing machine I shall soon find out if an uncomfortable amount of trignonometry has been done correctly or not
I'm feeling really good about my new LED art project. This is a collab with my partner Allie who did the illustration/vectors for the cloud. It'll have LEDs going under both layers, and then white opaque vinyl on top to give it a crisp edge and hide the coroplast ribs.
Per usual, this was designed in #inkscape and the inner layers were computed from that using #OpenSCAD.

New plotter design is nearly done. This will be an H belt design with the parts running on 2020 & 2040 V slot extrusion
I've completed all of the design (in #openSCAD), but I still have more parts to print and testing to do before I'll share the design; it will be on #printables at some point. It should do A3 and it might scale up to A2, but I'm a little concerned about stiffness and racking in the cross arm
I've been a long time proponent and participants in open source, starting I think back when I added Unicode #fonts support for #POVRay. Got sucked into Multimedia and some #3DModeling and animation #GameArt for one of the earlier large publishers. I stepped up my #OpenSource game by becoming one of the core developers then board members for #Inkscape. Got sidelined a bit, but getting involved again.
For day jobs I' slid into security. I've also picked up #3DPrinting & #OpenSCAD
#introduction
Alright, now that I have migrated to my home grown instance, it's time for an #introduction!
I hack. I've always been drawn to #programming both to solve problems, and to have fun. More recently, I've gotten deep into #electronics design and repair, which dovetails nicely with #RetroComputing. And because I inherited a 3D printer, I've gotten into #3DPrinting, #3DModeling (#Blender), and #CAD (#FreeCAD, #OpenSCAD). And for no reason whatsoever, I've recently gotten into #FreeBSD. I like it.
Occasionally I do some #art things, mostly #procedural or #generative. Or #PixelArt (I'm not good at it). Or #music (also not good at it). I have been known to #dj (I am OK at it, and I love #house and #techno).
I've found the Fediverse fascinating and challenging. Eager to dive deeper. :)
#introduction #introductions I'm Pete, I live in #milwaukee #wisconsin #usa and I'm a #maker #designer #creative who does #digitalFabrication #art #music #video and things like #arduino #microcontrollers #electronics and make #USB and #MIDI devices. I'm into #synth stuff and #drumMachines and I really like #cats and #3Dprinting and #laserCutters and I'm an occasional #printMaker and #makerFaire producer. I'm also a big fan of #inkscape #openSCAD and #openSource in general. How's that?
New layoffs, new #introduction
Hi! I'm Hugh from Ireland, but living in Amsterdam.
I'm taking time off between jobs, so I spend my time focusing on learning stuff like #3d-printing, #OpenSCAD, and #rust, #cycling around Amsterdam, playing #guitar and #bass, playing video games with my friends, and listening to lots of podcasts.
I'll do a new one of these when I start the job search properly!
