it bothers me the way people will say “must be AI generated” to mean “dishonest, scammy” in a way that humans have been doing as long as media has existed. The AI bros didn’t invent “lying” and there will still be people lying to you once we get the AI mess sorted
@0xabad1dea What really gets to me is that people seem to have forgotten that Photoshop still exist.
And really, everyone going "must be photoshopped" back in the day is really just an example of the same sort of thing in action. Photoshop didn't invent photo manipulation, it's amazing what you can do with projections, double exposure, cut&paste, darkroom antics and/or a few well-chosen airbrush strokes.
@0xabad1dea Yeah. I believe that the same set of people who were manually generating SEO spam/fake news in the past are now mass-generating spam/lies with AI on the Internet.
@0xabad1dea it's reminiscent of how folks on Twitter started (mis)using "bot" as a shorthand for anything from "incel troll" to "state-sponsored stooge" back in the day
@0xabad1dea But at least the masses are becoming aware of just how much plausible falsehood is out there. Maybe.
@0xabad1dea Yeah, but it's scammy without skill - like in the past, a forger had to actually be a master artisan to create fake artworks. A cult leader had to have a significant technical understanding of fiction tropes, to create a narrative about alien ghosts being tax audited, and the Mothership kept in the Forbidden Barn, etc.
to be 100% clear: I'm talking about stuff that there is absolutely no reason to think is literally AI generated, which is the exact same as the scams we had 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago, but it's getting called "AI generated". I think it is bad to dismiss everything which is maliciously dishonest as being meaningless blorble from a machine. If you take the idea "an AI made it, so it's not real" and invert it to "it's a lie, so an AI made it", the final result is "a human made it, so it's good, honest and true!" which is... 🥁 not true!
@0xabad1dea Adjacent: Also bothers me when people say "scammy" to mean "too expensive" or "I want it to be free" in the context of buying products/services.
Source: 50%-90% of my browser extension's feedback/reviews on any given week. It's a real, useful extension at a low price, so absolutely not a scam (I'm not stealing money in exchange for nothing). I've also seen the same feedback pattern in others' paid products/services.
@0xabad1dea would say that most AI things are deadass lies
@M1das_OW2 that's... orthogonal to the point, which is that humans lie, have been lying and will continue to lie, even if all AI vaporized tonight.
@M1das_OW2 actually, sorry, I thought about it and realized I find your wording ambiguous, did you mean
1) most AI-generated things are lies/deceitful
2) most things that are labeled “AI” aren’t actually AI
@0xabad1dea I think this is major problem with the discourse around AI in general, in both directions. Choose your fallacy:
"LLMs are ethically bad therefore everything made with them must be artistically bad"
"This art is good therefore it can't have been made by an LLM"
"This LLM-made art is good, therefore LLMs can't be ethically bad after all"
etc.
@nicklockwood @0xabad1dea I’m really annoyed in general that anything involving some code is now AI. I heard a cronjob referred to as “our AI system” yesterday. That’s got as much AI as my alarm clock.
@metaning I'm talking about looking at *the exact same sort of shady product/ad* that was everywhere 5, 10, 15, 20 years ago and calling it "AI generated".
@0xabad1dea That does open up the intriguing possibility that those shady ads are what the AI is using as the training basis for the new versions...
@Owlor I don’t feel as strongly about that because to me “photoshop” is a word that means “(for a person to) manipulate an image”; whether it’s with a software brush or a physical one is usually besides the point. But “must be AI generated!”, said of something that clearly wasn’t, is specifically denying human agency and intention towards the result, which is bad when it’s a lovingly crafted piece of art but imo also bad when it’s a malicious scam!
