Edit: thanks all, I have picked up a new grinder. early xmas present to myself I guess! coffee nerds, my grinder has packed it in. what should I get? I need a workhorse daily type one that does some sort of dosing (either timed or whatever). I had a Eureka mignon specialita before, it was ... okay. The LCD died about a year in to ownership and then the motor packed it in today :(
@CatherineFlick I have the Sage Smart Grinder Pro, which is in fact not smart at all. I bought it after many years of replacing crappy grinders that would die after a year or so and it’s been rock solid.
@CatherineFlick Coffee geek here :), but I'm only into manual coffee gears (well, except for the precision scale and kettle). Are you only looking for an electrical grinder? If not, I can recommend very good options for manual grinders!
@CatherineFlick Not a coffee nerd, just an addict that needs his caffeine frequently. My WMF Stelio has never let me down (4 years and counting). Sure, it doesn't do super fine espresso but it's definitely better than the price suggests. https://www.wmf.com/de/en/wmf-stelio-coffee-grinder-edition-3200000107.html
@CatherineFlick I’d recommend you look at Baratza. The grinders work well, are well built, and very easy to repair. Spare parts for all of them are available at reasonable prices.
If you prefer flat burr either the Vario (W+ can dose by weight, otherwise by time) or Forte (AP is all purpose, BG is mostly for pourover - both dose by time) or if you like conical burrs the Sette 270 (Wi can dose by weight).
@CatherineFlick not a coffee nerd but we use the Oxo burr grinder and have been really happy with it. I think it has been going strong for about 5 years now.
@CatherineFlick personally incredibly happy with my commandante c40 for many years now. I’m not changing it until it dies.
I’m told the tigershark blades on the commandante x25 trailmaster are incredible, people report it beating many high-end expensive electric grinders on blind testing but I have not personally tasted it yet
For home usage I’m really sold on manual grinders and doing it by weight
@nerdd oh wow I used to have one of these a very long time ago! I think I had an Encore. It did the job but was very messy to grind directly into the basket. I will look at these other options you suggest, thank you!
@CatherineFlick You’re welcome :)
I don’t think they have done anything to reduce mess when grinding into a basket, but I’m not sure. I only do pour overs, so I just grind into the grounds bin on my Sette (and the Vario before that).
@CatherineFlick It is! It isn't particularly quiet, though. There is no doubt about whether it is running or not 😅
@jwildeboer Thanks for the suggestion! I'll take a look.
@p4bl0 @CatherineFlick Comandante C40 > * :D
@p4bl0 I have a couple of manual ones but yes, need to stave off the RSI so I would like an electric one! But thank you!!
@aeris @CatherineFlick That was true a few years ago, yes! Nowadays, I'd recommend a KINGrinder or 1zpresso model, depending on the intended usage (mainly espresso, mainly pour over, or maybe both of those).
@p4bl0 @aeris@firefish.imirhil.fr Thanks! I am mostly using this for espresso, I hand grind pour over ones in a manual grinder. I'll take a look!
@jon @CatherineFlick I also have one and it’s been very reliable. I like that there are spares available online without hassle, not that I’ve needed any so far.
