@Edent my Govee desk laps connected via local API like to do this sometimes as well. Just mentioning it to not solely go down the ZigBee route when investigating.

@Edent usually it would tell you why in the log. It not having a reason (an action triggered by a person or an automation run) suggests the light itself or the hub it’s connected to triggered it.

@Edent try to change the turn on behavior after an power cut to "restore". This seems like a power outage and after it gets power, it's on again, as that's the default.

@Edent did the light also turn on, or just the state in HA?
I have one IKEA light that turns on unexpectedly in HA without actually turning on IRL, no bloody idea what's causing it

@Edent If there's no cause listed then HA doesn't know about it. This kinda thing tends to be caused by a firmware update (on badly behaving devices) or a power outage - see if Hue allows you to change the default action after regaining power.

@awfulwoman ta! Looks like Hue won't send the commands to my 3rd party bulbs. So I either need a new hub, new bulbs, or a sleep mask.

@kaiserkiwi Thanks. Looks like I can only do that with the bulb's official app which only works on an older version of Android and is incompatible with my hub.

Doesn‘t help you now when the Hue bridge isn‘t providing that setting, but may prove helpful when migrating to a fully controllable network.

Ooooh! That is helpful. The specific bulb isn't actually on there, but gives me something to work with.
I don't suppose I can somehow send those Zigbee commands through HomeAssistant, can I?

Difficult, yeah.
As Z2M is just another way to interact with a Zigbee network (and has to be in charge of it), just like Zigbee Home Assistant (ZHA), or the Hue Hub.
Unfortunately, I never had access to a Hue Hub to check what one can do with it.
The only downside: you need to have some ethernet or USB enabled Zigbee dongle.

I can get some Zigbee stuff out of the Hue, but can't send the poweron state settings.
Any recommendations for a Zigbee dongle that'll work with Linux?

@Edent @AliveDevil if the lights are connected to the Hue bridge, is the power-on behaviour settings not available in the Hue app any more? IIRC it used to be.

@Edent sounds as good a reason as any. At least it’s not a device you wrote the firmware for so you can just shrug rather than knowing ultimately the blinding light at 3am is your own fault [gives the side eye to his bedside clock]

@Edent I think posting this cursed me as I was woken in the night by my bedside clock turning all its LEDs on while mysteriously no longer displaying the current date and time. (It is still receiving updates on the current cost of energy though)

@Edent From reading through the most plausible and testable suggestion is that it's when zigbee drops/comes-back.. I guess that can be tested by forcing zigbee to go away and give it x minutes then bring it back up and see how it behaves? I'm not really seeing any other useful debug information though..

Mine are candeo bulbs and not using Hue.

@johnmclear yeah, looks like they either lost power or network connection and came back on.
Sadly my hub doesn't support sending them instructions to change that setting.
