How hard for you was it to emigrate to the Netherlands? How difficult was the process of acquiring a visa? It's not on my short list of places to flee to owing to the language barrier but the list isn't etched in stone.
@LovingFalloutLondon1954 moving continents was the hardest thing I ever did, but it mostly wasn't the visa acquisition itself that was the problem.
However, the visa I'm on is only available to people who have a technical university degree and a job offer from one of a limited number of Dutch businesses who are on the register as needing specialized foreign talent.
Such a job will almost invariably be conducted in English. English fluency is widespread, especially among younger people and in cities.
Sometime at your convenience I would love to hear what challenges you encountered in moving to another continent. For example, I was going to buy or rent a cargo container for the household furnishings I have accumulated over a lifetime and don't wish to part with. I'll bet this would introduce all sorts of issues you perhaps didn't have to contend with.
@LovingFalloutLondon1954 I had to get a cargo container, yes. I ended up throwing out or giving away 3/4ths of my possessions to fit everything that wasn't in my suitcases into the smallest cargo container you can get. It was a few thousand dollars, it used up the entire moving budget my employer provided. And it took many weeks to arrive, so I had to carefully plan what was in my suitcases.
And then I got a bill from Customs for another 500 euros because my container sat at the docks too long, because it was Covid Crisis and everything was understaffed, which was in absolutely no way anything I had any control over but I still had to pay or I wouldn't get my box and it'd continue to accrue fees.
So, really important to be prepared for a bunch of surprise expenses like that. My total cost ended up being about ten thousand dollars to move one person from Boston, Massachusetts to the Netherlands.
