Mobile phones are not up to the challenge of tethering on a train. A device I would really love to have in my life but which AFAICT does not yet exist in a small/affordable enough form factor: a very portable USB-C 4G AND 5G dongle box with a chonky antenna (about the size of the antennae you get on fancy routers). With a little sucker to affix to a train window.
Anyone know of such a device? The glinet Puli AX comes really close to this functionality but... is not portable nor affordable.
@herdingdata The 5G part of this is what I'd also like, as well. The smaller GL.iNet routers that would be great form-factor wise (e.g. the Mudi) are 4G only.
@andrew exactly this! I wonder why so many of them don’t do 5G. (Is it just companies being glacially slow or is it a lack of general availability of the circuitry…?)
@herdingdata @andrew I think it’s that 5G is a big cost bump and doesn’t add a huge amount for most customers who don’t really need the extra bandwidth on their travel router.
