The UK has finally agreed to hand over the Chagos Islands. I think this comes into effect on June 1st. https://news.sky.com/story/uk-signs-deal-to-hand-over-control-of-chagos-islands-13372755
Now we wait to see what the fate of the .io TLD is.

Unless IANA decides to vary its (relatively new) policy on this, .io registrations should stop imminently and the zone will have a maximum of 10 years before being deleted.
@russss I was on the Iccan wiki about that last night, turns out theirs a bunch of drama surrounding who was supposed to get the proceeds from .Io and turns out neither government has and it's just some guy???
@jon I could be totally wrong it was very late when I read it.
But it would appear the UK government are like we didn't get any money and the changos are saying the same??
It's acting like a ggTLD already
@RolandRides .su pre-dates the ccTLD retirement policy so it's kind of grandfathered in. All the other obsolete ccTLDs have been deleted I believe.
@russss I wonder if the cctld can be migrated to a vanity tld while staying connected. We have so many junk TLDs like .cfd that keeping it alive wouldn't be that bad.
@RolandRides I think that would also require a policy change because 2-letter TLDs are reserved for country codes. But apparently they might be considering it in this instance.
