@whitequark that’s a lot harder, admittedly, but actually the paperwork I submitted for my visa only certified that I had never been arrested in Everett, Massachusetts because there’s no such thing as a document certifying you’ve never been arrested in the entire United States!
@0xabad1dea so usually being arrested, charged, or convicted isn't an immigration dead end because your conviction might've been something like "is gay" which is definitely not a crime in the destination country
one would have to look at the actual rules
@whitequark @0xabad1dea Makes sense. There are definitely specific offenses that are disqualifiers, IIRC you can't even get into Canada as a visitor much less immigrate if you have a conviction for DUI.
@whitequark yeah I’m just aware they definitely do care if you have done crimes when issuing work visas, I assume they look into the specifics before denying, but it’s definitely a real barrier
@whitequark @0xabad1dea I dont know if there is an expiration date or it's a lifetime ban but we had a secretary/admin type guy at $dayjob a decade ago who often attended conferences and events to do logistics support for client meetings and the like, and I was told that he couldn't do so for events in Canada because his DUI conviction was a disqualifier
