I am increasingly convinced that more than half the planet thinks the word “gate” simply means scandal and that Nixon’s troubles were aquatic
@Daojoan I am increasingly convinced half the planet never heard of Nixon, or any other history
@Daojoan @SRDas The Daily Show did a bit on this a few years back, where they were talking about watergate-gate.
When I was a kid my dad took a little detour and drove us by Watergate. I was confused by how boring and lacking in water it was.
@Daojoan I was just lamenting this last night, on the back of some drivel about "eight times social media broke the internet."
There seems to be some compulsion among LCD types to grasp at any term or phrase hinting at greatness, ironically rendering it mundane and petty.
@Daojoan As a little antidote, the folks behind the https://www.electoral-vote.com/ website/blog have collected a bunch of different ones that they throw in from time to time instead of -gate, so for instance they've referred to such things as “SignalGate" as the Teapot Signal Scandal, and other variations.
