I wasn't planning on having a DECT phone for #emfcamp because it seems illogical when I can use my mobile WiFi calling. What am I missing out on if I don't get one? Conscious of buying yet more electronic waste that will sit unused afterwards. But also want to be part of the fun! Sell it to me? Or, not?
@Thayer you can call some hackerspaces when you're bored, apparently
@Thayer that's a totally fair point I hadn't considered. Definitely doesn't make sense to me to buy one, but reuse an existing one if you have one.
@Thayer if you see and funny helplines listed anywhere you can just write them down and wander over to any of the phone posts to try them out. You don’t NEED a DECT, I didn’t have one last time and we just used the phones around site to call the funny numbers. That said I bought a pair in a charity shop for £3. Remember, it’s not ewaste if it’s being used.
@Thayer I tried a mobile client last time and it just didn't work. Never figured out the technicals on that because I had a lot of EMF to be doing. Picked up a second hand phone this time so I can be called upon when needed.
@Thayer you can use it at EMF. But you can also reuse it at most other hacker camps if you get the taste for them. Mine is going on six years of camps now. The signal is way better than mobile. It’s free once you have the handset. It’s a number you don’t mind giving out to people. It’s a fun ident (mine is FISH). It’s really fun to call the games or puzzles or info lines for automated rickrolls. Shall I go on?
@solderandchaos @Thayer You can use a VOIP SIP client on your phone connected to the wifi if you don't have DECT mind, but it won't be as reliable (that might be ok!)
@Psychiatrix I think I've got it working on SIP/linphone but yeah I'll grab handsets because fun. 🤩
@Thayer @Psychiatrix SIP is fine for playing with the phones. DECT is more reliable but I doubt missing the odd internal call will matter at all.

@DoomHammerNG I mean I'm taking my 14 year old with me, that covers that off nicely. He ☆is☆ a hackerspace, and chances are I'll never be bored 😅 actually, come to think of it, I don't remember the last time I was bored.
