Kicking off 2024 as I mean to continue, with cursed network configuration.

Well well well if it isn't the consequences of your own actions....

@james ❤️ computers suck, sorry for pointing out another way in which that’s the case!

@james ahh yes, I did just through the URL into my reader which does discovery. The RSS feed only appears to have the first post in it at the moment.

@james incidentally, your blog doesn’t have an RSS feed. Is the source available somewhere, I’ll add one if so because I’d like to read and know I’ll miss the posts without a feed.

@james count me in as a person who reads blogs. I sorted out an RSS reader last year after a long hiatus caused by Google Reader dying.

@pikesley thoughts and prayers. (I’m currently procrastinating on going to bed, because my brain’s instinctive reaction to having to get up in the morning is to avoid sleeping)

@james in which case this is truly terrible behaviour, and I’m frankly outraged at it.

@james I think there’s a balance to be found here. “Just get on with it” isn’t a healthy or effective approach, but especially for children I feel like you have to try to avoid them internalising “I have this condition therefore there’s no point even trying”. I’ve found that a really hard balance to get, both in myself and when talking to my son, and I absolutely side on erring away from pushing too hard.

@james not even a little one, as a treat?

I’ve spent most of this afternoon trying to understand how Web Push works, particularly under Safari on iOS. As with all things web this involves reading the documentation for 15 vaguely overlapping standards, and then divining the remaining bits via random blog posts.

My evening has been made by Siri responding to “remind me to buy AAA batteries tomorrow” with “ok, I’ve added buy triple-uh batteries for tomorrow”, somehow pronouncing it more as tripleuh.

Today in apps that should be websites news, I’ve received an email to let me know my coffee machine has an after sales support app now. I specifically bought it because it’s notoriously reliable and needs minimal maintenance.

I see Call the Midwife is still going with Christmas specials. Presumably they’ve now overtaken the present day and it’s a heart warming period drama from the post-apocalyptic hellscape of 2049.

Jusant is really quite a game. Captures the essence of climbing a cliff face, judging whether you can make a hand hold or a jump, without ever really having hard fail states so far. A very meditative experience.

@simon apparently he pushed really hard for the role because he wanted to be in something his daughter could watch.

@pikesley I’m so very sorry. I encountered that the other day.

@gsuberland I’ve just checked the confirmation of the order I’m picking up this afternoon. Every herb ordered has been substituted with coriander. I have 3 bunches of coriander and no other herbs, why would anyone think that was the right thing to do?

For the last week I’ve been saying I’ll get an early night, and yet here I am, at 11pm, vaguely thinking about going to bed and reading for an hour or so.

@james if he put their bank balance and run rate with those no one would ever donate again. Last I looked at this Wikimedia Foundation are *fine*. Worst case they’d have to shut down a couple of the umpteen side projects no one uses.

@CatherineFlick this was the one bit of Christmas shopping I failed to fit in this afternoon.

@solderandchaos oh, that was a day ago. Apparently over £20 is typically the point where corporate overlords are going to make it awkward.

@solderandchaos please hold, consulting my brother, who is a barista.

@ehproque @Reb@strangeobject.space @james I once paid for a gym subscription for one full year without ever walking through the front door. I meant to, but after three months of “oh, I should go do the onboarding” I couldn’t face explaining it to the inevitable look of disbelief from the staff.

“The signal is repeating! We’ve got the whole thing.”

“How many bits?”

“Almost 500k. 454,957 bits”

“I got a hunch, factorize that number”

“Bingo, seven fifty seven times six oh one. Think it could be a rectangular bitmap?”.

“It’s what we used to do back before those assholes let Arecibo fall down. Try bm2png.pl in my bin dir.”

“That worked. Holy shit I know that image. It’s the Pioneer plaque. That diagram from Pioneer 11 of human figures, and a map to Earth.”

“What, thats impossible, it’s only been, what, 70 odd years. That probe would still be in our own Kuiper Belt.”

“Outside it, actually, it’d be about one sixty AU out. They lost contact in the mid 90s. Still basically in our backyard but.”

“It’s too soon! If someone’s found it now, that would mean. Shit. They’re. Already. Here. Inside the Solar system.”

“And all they’ve got to say, is ‘Hi, we liked ur meme’.?”

“Maybe not, can you bring up an image of the original plaque? Are the images identical?”

“I’ll do a layer subtraction. Hey, there /is/ a difference. In the map of the planets. They’ve omitted Pluto from their copy.”

“Fucking hell. Little green reply guys.”
