@ceejbot @graydon maybe later? I’ll ask again in a day or two, you’ll probably have changed your mind.

The idea that kids who go have to participate in active shooter drills in school and adults steadfastly refuse to pass gun control laws has no effect on teen mental health but makeup influencers on TikTok do is an interesting form of blame shifting.

@choffee @CatherineFlick the thing that gets me here is that contracts mean the Southampton school mentioned are tied in, despite there now being a city wide coop which does good quality school dinners at near cost price. Why doesn’t the contract have an escape clause if the supplier fails to deliver on what they’re being paid for?

@james@strangeobject.space you’ll either love it or you’ll hate it. Really comes into its own when you’ve got multiple displays and can flick between different workspaces on each with two key presses.

@james@strangeobject.space back when I was using Linux as a desktop it was XMonad. Ever since I switched to macOS I’ve been missing a proper tiling window manager with keyboard controls, enough so that I will occasionally consider switching back.

@wikihow that cat has seen some shit.

Out of nowhere the boy just silenced everyone at this family gathering to say “when you think about it the mythological gods had a lot on their plate”.

No, TV, when I hit the standby button on the remote I don't want to be given a selection of attractive wallpapers to be displayed, I want you to go into standby. How is this even a thing?

"Welcome to our gander reveal party!"

"Don't you mean..."

"No."

Geese emerge from everywhere. There are no fireworks. Only geese. There are no balloons. Only chaos. There are no genders. Only honk.

@geekygirldawn @Conan_Kudo that’s what I typically go for in work settings, but does it work so well for open source where it’s possible if someone won the lottery they’d be very happy that they no longer need to find funding for the project they’re working on?

@flauschpolizei@strangeobject.space @james@strangeobject.space we work four day weeks, but if there’s a bank holiday that’s the day off. (Like an idiot I forgot about this, and didn’t work Monday anyway, so will be working on Friday, or maybe taking a day of leave)

Thought I’d killed one of our devices because it fell offline just as I flipped the configuration to test a new feature which had caused issues on test devices. Turns out coincidence had struck, someone unplugged it to take out to a client site for install at that very moment.

@james@strangeobject.space even better news, so is Friday.

@thegreatgonzo it’s worth looking at office clearance sites, I got a Hermann Miller from one at about 25% list price. Still expensive, but it’s the comfiest chair I’ve ever owned and everything is replaceable when things break.

Capitalism is such a miserable thing. I look at the developments in machine learning based creation and it should be a joyful silly thing, I love that I can ask a machine to make me an industrial metal song about Crème Eggs being smaller now, but it’s all tinged by the fact it’s just another step along the road to putting people’s basic survival in jeopardy as we take their livelihoods and hand them over to make three people marginally richer.

@NanoRaptor my friend next door had a dot matrix printer in his room, and we also had a network cable running between our houses. I may have once started a print job at 2am just to annoy him.

@james@strangeobject.space as for Valheim, I like it. Not my thing usually but the boy loves an open world survival game and I couldn’t take any more Minecraft, so it’s nice to have something where we can build stuff and kill the occasional troll together.

@james@strangeobject.space I’ve been going to and volunteering at EMF events since 2012, EMW is the only event I didn’t go to, been on the organising team since 2018. This year I’m mostly looking after the small army of volunteers needed to make the event happen, which is mostly shuffling spreadsheets around and software development at the moment, we’ll use push notifications to remind people they signed up for a shift, and to send out pleas for help when needed.

@jmacarthur that’s why they have indicators.

@james@strangeobject.space I will be:

* Getting a release out to some devices for testing.
* Running to the shops to buy food so I don’t starve.
* Fixing the device we use for hardware CI.
* Fixing the inevitable broken tests.
* Playing a bit of Valheim with the boy
* Making dinner
* More work on push notifications at EMF
* Collapsing into bed and reading a bit

@tef I have hopes that Little Kitty Big City is going to do a better job of this. We shall see.

@CatherineFlick 10/10, no notes.

@hugh it would certainly be quicker than waiting in the pizza van queue.

I have just discovered that those odd waste/recycling bins that are all over the oldest bits of Bergen, Norway, link to an UNDERGROUND PNEUMATIC WASTE TRANSPORT SYSTEM. The waste collects for a bit and then WHOOSH... it's off to the recycling centre. All underground. No bin lorries (garbage trucks), fewer road vehicles, less noise... amazing. @davidho says that my (considerable) excitement about this is entirely unreasonable. I disagree.
